KINCARDINE, ON – Sauble Speedway mainstay Will Gibbons will be back behind the wheel this Saturday intent on fashioning his first Mini Stock victory of the 2017 season.
Gibbons has shown considerable speed all season long, however a propensity for rolling off deep in the starting field has played a considerable role in keeping his sharply prepared No. 10 from victory lane.
“We’ve had an awesome car all year – but I really need to hire someone to roll the invert dice [for me] because I haven’t been able to grab a decent starting position to save my life,” laughs Gibbons.
“We’ve won a lot of our qualifying heat races this season. But as soon as they roll the invert dice we seem to end up starting as far back as you can get more often than not.”
Despite his winless streak, Gibbons maintains a positive attitude and knows there’s still a chance to chalk up a few solid nights of competition before the door closes on 2017.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that this car is strong enough to go on a streak late in the season,” notes the longtime Sauble Speedway regular. “That’s absolutely our goal for the next month.”
“We want to get this first win out of the way and then use that momentum to keep rolling,” continues Gibbons. “I’m a huge believer in that. Once you can get to victory lane once it seems like it’s a lot easier to start stringing wins together.”
For Gibbons’ volunteer-led squad, there remains a distinct built-not-bought mentality that they hope will help propel them to the top of Sauble’s surprisingly deep Mini Stock roster.
“We’re not a large scale team by any stretch of the imagination – but we’re as resilient as anyone else in the pits,” smiles Gibbons. “If we aren’t winning then we’re going home and working until we’re satisfied. We haven’t got there yet this season, but I promise that it’s not for a lack of trying.”
“We’ve logged more shop hours this season than ever,” adds the Kincardine, ON native. “We’re just on the outside of that [first] win now. But, we’re gaining. It’s going to happen for us. I have no doubt.”
