KINCARDINE, ON – Sauble Speedway mainstay Will Gibbons has announced his family-operated team has filed entry to Sunset Speedway’s upcoming Velocity weekend, scheduled for September 23rd and 24th.
Gibbons will no doubt be in impressive company, as the Mini Stock entry list for the event perennially boasts well over 30 of the province’s top competitors.
“It’s always exciting to be a part of events like this because they draw talent from all across the province,” says Gibbons. “When you’re headed to a weekend like the Velocity, you know that you’re in for a battle before you ever step foot on the property.”
“Everyone wants to win this race,” continues the longtime Sauble Speedway regular. “It’s a big deal. It’s a win that really means something. Being able to call yourself a Velocity winner is an accomplishment that people remember forever.”
But while he can’t help but hide his excitement, Gibbons is well aware of the concentration and effort that will he required of him should he hope to stand a chance at walking out of the weekend as a Velocity winner.
“I’m ready for two days of hard work,” answers Gibbons with a laugh when asked his expectations of the upcoming event. “There isn’t a single driver in this division that can just ‘luck’ their way into a win on that weekend. It’s a grind just to qualify for the feature.”
“We have to make sure that our package is in order as soon as the car comes off the trailer,” continues the veteran. “They don’t give you a ton of practice laps, so you really need to make sure your car is in the ballpark when you sign in at the back gate.”
And with his most recent victory on September 2nd still fresh in his memory, Gibbons can’t help but enter the Velocity weekend with some much-deserved confidence in his back pocket.
“Our win at the Sauble finale really set things in the right direction for us,” notes the Kincardine, ON wheelman. “We’ve been working hard as a team all season and got close to a win more times than I could count. It felt amazing to finally clinch one.”
“Now that we have things working the way we need them to, I’m positive that our car is strong enough to outrun anyone in this province.”
