BARRIE, ON – While Johnny Morrison’s 2017 season has already produced a considerable number of memorable moments – including a series of podium finishes and a first career Super Stock victory – the second-generation racer is headed for this weekend’s Velocity 250 event at Sunset Speedway full of hunger and motivation to further define himself as a future champion of the talent-laden division.
“I can’t pretend – even for a second – that the road we’ve been on hasn’t been a long one,” shrugs Morrison with a laugh. “We’ve started from the ground up with our program. Our team has fought and clawed for every inch that we’ve made up in the last five years.”
“This is the toughest division in Ontario to break into,” adds the second-generation star. “But we’ve done it the right way. And I’m proud of that. We’ve worked our way through this division with research and shop time – we didn’t just go write someone a cheque.”
And while Morrison’s journey to perennial contender has been unquestionably arduous, the son of former Sunset regular Rob Morrison can’t help but smile when looking back on his head-turning 2017 campaign.
“This has been the best year that we’ve ever had,” says the blue-collar rising star. “All the hours we’ve put in have got us to this point.”
“We’re a threat to win every night now. That’s what we’ve always wanted. I feel like our team has known that we were ready to run with the top guys in this division for a long time – but this season we’ve proved it to everyone.”
For the longtime Super Stock regular, a Velocity weekend triumph would be the ideal way to cap off a breakout season as he continues to establish himself as one of the considerable bright spots of Sunset’s near future.
“A [Velocity] win would be one of the biggest moments of my life,” nods Morrison. “It would be a career highlight – without question. We just want to perform to the best of our ability. If we can do that, we’re pretty confident everything else will work itself out. All eyes are going to be on Sunset this weekend – so there’s no better time for us to have our best race of the year.”
