HILLSDALE, ON – Support continues to grow for promoter Mark Dilley’s upstart Great Lakes Concrete Series. The six-race mini-series will feature a trio of events at Sunset Speedway and Sauble Speedway that is likely to feature the top Ltd. Late Model talent in all of Ontario.
Recently, veteran racer – and podcast host – Thayne Hallyburton threw his support behind the series as he looks to include a number of its events into his 2018 season.
“I think this is the style of collaboration that we need a lot more of at this level,” says Hallyburton. “It’s an awesome idea and it’s a formula that we’ve seen work before. Sunset and Sauble had their Home-and-Home Series a few years ago and Flamboro and Delaware had their six-pack series that was born out of the same concept.”
“Any time you put two speedways together it seems like you get a ton of cars and you get fantastic racing,” continues the multi-time feature winner. “And, right now, that’s exactly what every speedway needs more than anything else.”
In a time in which the Ltd. Late Model class has seen participation at an all-time low, Hallyburton feels as though the mini-series will provide a fresh spin on a division that is very much in need of a reinvigoration.
“I don’t think there’s any way to hide the fact that [Limited Late Model] car counts have been headed in the wrong direction for a couple seasons,” explains ‘The Hillsdale Hurricane’. “But this series has everyone talking. It’s good news for all of us. It’s a short schedule and it gives you the chance to get away from your home track for a few races – which is always interesting.”
And though Hallyburton has not yet firmed up his complete 2018 schedule, he’s certain that his Hillsdale Service Center-sponsored team will support the six-race series in some fashion.
“I’m still sitting down with my parents and the rest of the guys on this team to figure out where we’re going to be and when,” says Hallyburton. “So, I can’t say with certainty that we’ll be fulltime with the [Great Lakes Concrete] Series but we’re absolutely going to throw our weight behind this deal as much as we possibly can.”
“I love the Limited Late Model division and I want to make sure it continues to survive. This series is absolutely a step in the right direction to make that a reality.”
