INNISFIL, ON – Sunset Speedway fan favourite Ryan Semple turned in what could go down as one of his most memorable performances on Sunday afternoon – bouncing back from a significant practice-day fire – to register a head-turning runner-up finish in the Velocity 250’s Super Stock feature.
“There was definitely some damage but we knew it wasn’t anything we couldn’t fix,” explained ‘Kid Ruckus’ when asked if his car’s condition after the fire engulfed the engine bay of his No. 64. “We pulled in and just put our heads down and worked”
“This car was too fast to just pack up for the weekend,” added the young veteran. “I knew, in my heart, if we could get it fixed that we would have a chance to really have a strong performance. I’ve never had so much faith in my equipment. This car’s been a dream to drive all season and this weekend wasn’t any different”
Semple’s Sunset Speedway career has been one defined by the Loretto, ON native’s admirable ‘never say die’ attitude – which was on full display throughout the 2017 season – and especially so during the Velocity weekend.
“That’s what our team is built on – you can’t hold us down,” smiled Semple post-race. “I mean, we’ve been doing this sort’ve thing for as long as we’ve been racing. Nothing ever feels like it comes easy to us”
“We just get knocked down and then get back up. We’re used to it. It doesn’t phase us. We don’t even think about long odds anymore, we just try to think about what we need to do to beat them”
And with rumours still ringing of Semple’s potential retirement at season’s end, the 2017 championship runner-up still refused to rule out a possible return to competition next season.
“We’re still hoping we can put something together for next year – but the sponsorship support needs to be there for that to happen,” explained the fan favourite. “So, if this performance was last one at Sunset for a while, it’s absolutely something I can be proud of”
“We stood toe-to-toe with the best teams in the province and brought back a result we can be happy with. I cant thank my sponsors and my team enough for sticking with me – 2017 was the best year we’ve ever had and it’s all because of them.”
