ORILLIA, ON- OSCAAR Modified Tour point leader AJ Emms will take his next step towards a first career championship this weekend as Flamboro Speedway hosts the penultimate stop on the 2019 schedule.
Emms currently enjoys a 56-point lead entering Flamboro but is well aware that his journey towards an OSCAAR title is far from over – especially with the tour’s always-dangerous roster.
“Each time we roll into the pits it’s a reminder of how tough it is to win on this tour,” said Emms. “The race teams on this roster are working to improve their programs. It keeps you on your toes, that’s for sure.”
“Even when you’re on a hot streak the rest of the guys on this roster do a good job of grounding you pretty quickly – because you know they’re working like crazy to beat you. This tour is a battle every step of the way. You have to make sure you have your stuff as close to perfect as possible each time you leave the shop.”
Although Emms has been a threat to win on the tour for several seasons – noted most famously by his 2016 Autumn Colours Classic victory – he has showcased a new level of maturity during his pursuit of this year’s championship.
“Points racing is a different beast from just coming out every couple weeks and trying to run up front,” offers Emms. “It comes with its own set of ups and downs. Because, you’re not going to be the hero every night. And you need to make sure you’re reacting the right way on those nights where you aren’t in victory lane.”
“We’ve done our best to work on our complete package every week this season – win or lose,” adds the likable star. “If you want to contend for a championship on this tour you have to have it all. The right team, the right car, the right driver and that willingness to keep learning and improving. I think we’re checking all of those boxes this season.”
And, as Emms moves closer and closer towards his end goal, the events on the schedule seem to loom larger.
“Frostoberfest is a big weekend from top to bottom no matter what division you’re racing in,” says Emms. “But, if you want to win championships, you gotta find a way to show up in big-race situations. I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t pressure, but we’re loving every minute of it.”
“We’re ready for a fight on Sunday,” continues the AJ, “These teams don’t give up any position easily, especially in big events like this one. Anyone that’s hoping to hang around at the front had better be ready for a scrap – because we’re coming to battle.”
