SAUBLE BEACH, ON – With just three points-paying events remaining in the 2017 Sauble Speedway Thunder Car season, Zack Casemore holds a slim 5-point lead over his closest pursuer as he looks to clinch his first career track championship.
“It’s so tough to understand how hard it is to run for a championship until you’re right in the middle of it,” remarks Casemore. “Right before we got started this season I tried to imagine what it was going to be like to put a title run together but I was way off.”
“It’s really not for the faint of heart. It’s all-consuming. If you’re doing this properly, it takes up just about every free hour you have. You never stop thinking about it because you’re trying to get better and better every weekend.”
Casemore is one of the top young stars of a division brimming with talent both new and old, and he makes sure to credit the depth of the Sauble roster for helping the class rise to the level of one of the province’s best in recent years.
“This division is so good from top to bottom that it doesn’t really leave you any room for error,” notes the Sauble Beach, ON native. “Everyone is running lap times that are real similar and everyone is putting everything they have into their programs.”
“It’s tough enough just to put together one good night, but if you want to contend for that championship you need to have a good night every week for two months,” adds Casemore. “It tests you as a team and as a driver. It’s not easy. There aren’t too many speedways where you have to work this hard on a nightly basis to try and get to the front.”
When asked his mindset entering the final 3 points events of the season, Casemore admits that while the dreams of a successful championship run is what first influenced him to enter the sport, he knows his work is far from finished this season.
“A track championship is what everyone on this roster came into this sport to do – and I’m no different,” says Casemore. “Any guy out here that’s sinking each one of his paychecks into a racecar. Every team that’s in the shop every night spending hours and hours away from their families. We all want the same thing.”
” But we know that we can’t let up for every a moment,” continues the breakout star. “It would be a heartbreaker to be at the top of the standings all season just to have it slip through our fingers right at the end.”
