ORO-MEDONTE, ON – Just two days removed from dominating the 75-lap Limited Late Model portion of the famed Autumn Colours Classic, blue-collar standout Rick Spencer-Walt is still processing what could be very well be the biggest win of his career, as his team looks ahead to their plans for the 2018 campaign.
“I wanted to walk out of there on Sunday with something this team can be proud of,” beams Walt. “We’ve worked all year for this. We’ve gotten this car better and better and better every single time we’ve had it on the speedway. There’s no coincidence that we won that race – Sunday was the strongest this car has felt all season.”
Walt’s second career Autumn Colours Classic triumph (he previously won the Thunder Car portion of the event in 2011) came by virtue of a pole starting position that he earned with a ‘Chase for the Colours’ qualifying win in July. And, with it, Walt becomes the first Ltd. Late Model competitor to win ‘the Classic’ from the pole since the inception of ‘the Chase’ in the mid-2000s.
“I feel like people we’re starting to think there was a curse on guys starting front row in this race,” laughs ‘The Upgrade’. “I’m happy I could break that. I really don’t think it would have mattered where we started. We unloaded with a rocket and we were going to be moving forward one way or another.”
For Walt’s Eldon Wallis-owned team, the Autumn Colours Classic title is the latest in a long series of accolades over the course of the last three seasons – including a bevy of weekly feature victories at Sunset, Peterborough and Barrie – and a 2016 Peterborough Championship.
Now, as rumours begin to swirl of Walt’s possible exit from fulltime Ltd. Late Model competition in 2018, there’s no question his numbers are as impressive as any other divisional standout in recent memory.
“I’m proud of a lot of the things we’ve accomplished in this division – but this absolutely ranks right at the top of the list,” explains Walt. “We’re really up in the air about where we want to go with our Limited Late [Model] program right now. Our team has some really exciting plans about what we’re doing [in 2018] and we’ll be announcing those real soon.”
