ORO-MEDONTE, ON – Almost two full months removed from departing fulltime APC United Late Model Series competition, notoriously successful Ltd. Late Model star Rick Spencer- Walt will be back behind the wheel of a Pro Late Model this Saturday – as the APC Series hits Sunset Speedway for Round 7 of its 2018 schedule.
“We’ve gone over this car from nose to tail-cone since the last time we had it at a speedway – so when we come off the trailer on Saturday I can guarantee you’re going to see the best of us,” says Walt. “When you look at the quality of competition you’re up against in these tour races, you really shouldn’t bother coming with anything less than your top stuff. Anything else is a waste of time. If you aren’t prepared – these guys will leave you behind in a hurry.”
The Oro-Medonte, ON product initially planned to follow the tour across Ontario on a fulltime basis – registering a 4th place finish in the series’ season opener at Sunset on May 20th. However, after frustrating finishes of 21st and 22nd at Flamboro and Peterborough in Rounds 2 and 3, Walt and his Eldon Wallis-owned team elected to pull back from touring action in favour of filling out a weekly schedule of Ltd. Late Model action at Sauble Speedway.
“I really didn’t want to drop off the tour when we did – but after we had that awesome start at Sunset we just didn’t have any luck those next two races,” admits ‘The Upgrade’. “As far as we saw it, those finishes (at Flamboro and Peterborough) pretty much kneecapped us from taking a run at the points title, and we didn’t just want to be hauling up and down the road on this tour just to say that we did it. We figured the best move to make would be to drop off the tour, get our stuff even better than it already was, hit the full tour next year and win that points championship.”
Now, entering an event in which points position plays virtually no importance, Walt knows that the scene is set for him to deliver a memorable performance that could ultimately lead to his first career APC Series win.
“There’s no extra pressure to perform when we’re at Sunset because I expect to win every time I race,” Say Spencer-Walt “It doesn’t matter what division. It doesn’t matter what speedway we’re at. If we’re throwing tires on this thing and topping it up with fuel – we’re going out to try and bring back a trophy. You can’t put any more pressure than that on yourself.”
“We know how to win one of these (extended-distance) races and we definitely know how to win at Sunset – so, now we just need to do that on Saturday,” continues the multi-time Sunset Ltd. Late Model feature winner. “There’s not much these teams can throw at us that we haven’t seen before. We just need to trust our instincts, race our race and not trip over ourselves. If we can do that, we’re going to have a good chance to steal some headlines.”
