ORO-MEDONTE, ON – With a first ever Sunset Speedway Limited Late Model championship freshly added to his team’s forever expanding trophy case, provincial standout Rick Spencer- Walt is already looking ahead to his next challenge – though he’s not quite ready to tip his hand as to what that means for his team in 2020.
“Leaving Sunset at the end of the season with the championship was an awesome feeling because it felt like putting a giant check-mark on our ‘To Do’ list,” explains Spencer-Walt.
“It didn’t define us as a team, but it’s absolutely something we’ve wanted to put on our resume. We know we’re one of the best team’s in this division. We don’t need a track championship tell us that. But, to come out week after week and fight for it and earn it, that was unreal.”
Spencer-Walt – alongside car owner Eldon Wallis – has built one of the most formidable Limited Late Model programs in Ontario. Numerous feature triumphs at speedways across the province have served to carve out a reputation as a threat to win at any facility he unloads at.
“From the first day that Eldon came on board with me he made it pretty clear that he wanted to be a champion,” notes Walt. “We were able to do it at Peterborough, we were able to do it at Sauble – and now we’ve done it at Sunset. I couldn’t be more proud of us.”
“We haven’t defended a championship at Sunset yet but it’s definitely something that we’re considering,” continues ‘The Upgrade’. “This is a championship-caliber team and it would be a shame not to keep winning titles while we have everyone together. I feel like we have lightning in a bottle here – the best owner, the best sponsors, the best crew and the best equipment.”
Still, despite their incredible success in the Limited Late Model ranks, Rick has been open with his aspirations of trying his hand outside of the division in recent months.
“The bottom line is that we want to race against the best competition available,” explains Walt. “There are some real top-level teams outside of Limited Late Models. We want the chance to try and go up against those guys and see what we can do.”
“We’ve had some options to try a few different things next season so we’ll see what happens,” continues the fan favourite. “I know that we absolutely want to do as much Super Late (Model) racing as we can. That’s a priority for sure.”
“I plan on sitting down with Eldon and the team and our sponsors and trying to figure out where we’re headed for next season. We should know pretty soon. But, I can absolutely guarantee that we’ll be chasing wins in Ontario next season. No matter what division we’re in.”
