WOODVILLE, ON – News of Thunder Car standout Anthony DiBello’s plans of entering the Open Wheel Modified division broke in early October and rapidly became one of the most talked-about transactions of the offseason.
“As soon as the news came out about the Modified I don’t think my phone stopped going off for three days,” laughs DiBello. “It’s the division that everyone seems to have their eye on right now. Look at how many teams are buying Modifieds right now. The division as a whole is getting ready for a boom period.”
“I’m so excited to throw my name in the ring with the rest of these drivers,” continues the 3-time Peterborough Speedway Thunder Car champion. “It’s the kind of racing that’s going to make you work hard for positions every single night – and that’s what our team is all about.”
For DiBello, the move to tour with an Open Wheel Modified is a decision that his family-run program made sure not to take lightly.
“I’m not a trust fund kid,” explains the second-generation racer with a laugh. “Our team doesn’t work with anything close to the budget that most of these other guys do. So, when we decided we were ready for a new challenge, we knew that it had to be something that made sense financially.”
“You can get a lot of racing for your money with the [Open Wheel] Modifieds,” continues DiBello. “That’s what ultimately made the decision for us. It was an absolute no-brainer. It’s the right option at the right time and I really believe that our team is going to fit right in with where the division is headed.”
While DiBello is not yet ready to commit to the OSCAAR Modified Tour or Ontario Modified Racing Series, he notes that his DiBello Towing-backed outfit is excited about the prospect of competing at speedways across Ontario.
“I want to race as much as possible next year,” offers DiBello. “I have no idea how many events we’ll be able to get to or where those events will be, though. A lot of that will come down to what kind of a sponsorship budget that we have to work with.”
“Winning a tour race at Peterborough would be an incredible feeling because it’s our backyard,” adds the fan favourite. “But I’m just as excited to see if we can get to the front at a place like Sunset or Flamboro, too.”
“This car is going to give us a lot of options as far as what our schedule will look like. We’re definitely going to take a look at both tours and see where they’re going and when and then put our own plans together.”
