BARRIE, ON – Second-generation racer Dustyn Mombourquette will have a brand new chassis at his disposal when he returns to Sunset Speedway this season.
The soft-spoken teenager has been hard at work all Winter alongside his father – multi-time Sunset Speedway Late Model feature winner John Mombourquette – building a new car with which to chase the 2019 Super Stock weekly championship.
“This is what we feel we need to do to get our program to the next level,” says Dustyn. “The division is advancing faster now than it ever has before. The teams are getting better, the cars are getting faster and the technology is improving almost every week. Hopefully this new chassis is what keeps us from being left behind.”
However, while the equipment rolling out of the team’s hauler on raceday will be different, Mombourquette insists that the family-run operation maintains the same goals and aspirations they’ve carried for the in the past seasons.
“We want to do anything and everything in our power to one day be the best team on this roster, That’s our reason for being. That’s what all of the time and research is for. I know that we can get there and I really believe that we’re closer now than we’ve ever been.”
“We finished 6th in points last year which was a huge moment for us,” continues the likeable youngster. “I couldn’t even begin to tell you how many hours in the shop went into getting us to that place in the standings. I know that we have a long way to go – but it’s awesome to look back and see how far we’ve come.”
When asked if he ever feels the pressure of competing in what many have called the most talent-laden weekly division in the province, Mombourquette replies with a smile and unflinching honesty.
“This is the division that will have you pulling your hair out every single Saturday no mater who you are. But when you make a pass out there – no matter who it is you’re passing – you feel like you’ve worked for and earned it. That’s what motivates our team and keeps us coming back.”
