BARRIE, ON – Sunset Speedway Super Stock sophomore Justin Holmes will roll into July 22nd’s event with some much-welcomed confidence after an impressive 2nd place finish last Saturday. After an up-and-down opening to the year, Holmes is in much need of some consistency as his family-operated team looks to carve out a reputation for themselves in the talent-laden division.
‘’When you can run in the top-3 in this field it absolutely tells you that your hours in the shop have been worth something,’’ says Holmes. “We’re moving in the right direction. We know that now. That [second place] run meant everything to us, because we’re put absolutely everything we’ve got into this car. All the time and all the effort and all the money – and to have it come back for us with a top-3 is an awesome feeling. Now, we need a win”.
Holmes’ team – staffed entirely by family members and volunteers – has seemed to take strength from his recent resurgence, as they prepare for a very busy schedule that will take them through the second half of the 2017 schedule.
“It definitely makes the shop nights pass by a lot faster,” laughs the second-generation racer when asked what type of impact his runner-up performance had on his HWY 400 Transmission-backed team. “Once you hit late-July, the days feel long and the weeks feel even longer working on these cars. They call it the dog-days for a reason”.
“You really have to dig down deep to find the energy and the drive to keep going,” adds Holmes. “Last Saturday was a huge pick-me-up for us. We need energy to be successful and performances like that give us that energy”.
The team has showcased an indefatigable will to win thus far, and now that headway has been made, expect the No. 400 to be a factor each and every week.
‘’We’ve spent all year trying to find this,’’ insists Holmes. ‘’We’ve all worked nonstop to find the right setup and the right package to bring this car to life and get it competitive on a weekly basis. It feels like we’re there now. We have what we’ve been looking for and now it’s up to me to make sure we use it. We’ll be doing everything in our power to get this car to the front and keep it there on Saturday”.
