BARRIE, ON – With a September 2nd podium finish still fresh in his memory, breakout Super Stock star Johnny Morrison is eager to close out his 2017 season in emphatic fashion.
The confident youngster has already laid claim to a first career feature win earlier this summer, and after a string of strong runs in recent weeks, is more than ready to add to his win totals before the offseason takes hold.
“This is the time of year where you need to get hot,” says Morrison. “My dad always taught me that. You have to end strong. Nobody wants to go out at the end of the season feeling like they weren’t at their best. We’re peaking right now and I think we can put up some more numbers in the next few weeks.”
For Morrison, the road from mid-pack to feature contention has been a winding one, though it’s clearly not something he would change if given the chance.
“It’s all a process, man,” shrugs the second-generation star. “Our team has paid a lot of dues to be able to run at the front of the field considering how good these other guys are. It’s happening now because we put the time in. The cars we’re racing against are the kind that make you stay in the shop late and then get up even earlier the next morning.”
With only a pair of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events remaining at Sunset this year, Morrison is ready to meet the rest of the Super Stock division head-on this Saturday.
“It seems like as soon as the schedule hits September, guys start getting ready to take those big swings to try and win races,” explains Morrison. “You can feel the change in people’s attitudes. Everything starts to mean a little bit more.”
“I love it,” continues the Barrie, ON racer. “I thrive off of atmosphere, and it’s an awesome feeling when there’s a pit area full of hungry guys that are all going after the same thing. We’ll be ready for them on Saturday. I believe with everything in me that we have a car and a setup package right now that can take us to the front and keep us there.”
