OSHAWA, ON – Longtime Peterborough Speedway standout John Baker Jr. will be back on home soil this Saturday, as the Ontario Modified Racing Series rolls into Canada’s fastest 1/3-mile for the opening round of their 2018 campaign.
For Baker, the evening will serve as both a homecoming as well as an initial opportunity to declare his intentions of chasing down the 2018 OMRS championship.
“I’ve said it before – you’re never going to hear an argument out of me when it comes to having a chance to race at Peterborough Speedway,” smiles Baker. “It’s always going to be the best feeling in the world to race in front of my friend and family. But, more than that, I just love the speedway itself.”
“It’s a challenge to get around,” continues the former Autumn Colours Classic winner. “It’s most definitely not for the weak hearted. You have to unload there respecting the track. Because, if you don’t, there’s a chance you could slip up and take your equipment home in a box.”
Never short on confidence, Baker knows that his team is as capable of any of unloading at Peterborough with a competitive package that could hold off the best of the best that the OMRS regulars have to offer.
“I see no reason why this car can’t come out and run in the top-5 in Saturday,” opines ‘JBJ’. “We know that we’re going to need to be at our best because the competition is so tough. But, we need to open the season with a win.”
“That sort’ve start to the year would be priceless for us,” adds the Oshawa, ON native. “It’s a short schedule so we don’t have much time to mess around. We gotta come out and strike some fear into these guys early.”
And, despite Baker’s laundry list of career accomplishments, there’s never any room to question just how much a Peterborough Speedway victory will always mean to the second-generation competitor.
“No matter what I race – or where I race it – the goal is always going to be the come out and have a piece that’s strong enough to beat anyone,” explains Baker. “I’m excited to come into Saturday and remind the province of just how good this team can be.”
“We’ve been fortunate enough to win some real big races – but the feeling of finishing up front at Peterborough is never going to get old for us. We’ll be ready to play with our A Game by the time everything kicks off this weekend.”
