OWEN SOUND, ON – Former Thunder Car standout Smokin’ Joe Adams will be back behind the wheel of a Legends Car in 2018. The longtime Sauble Speedway regular will follow the Western Ontario Legends Series – visiting Sauble Speedway, Sunset Speedway, Flamboro Speedway and Peterborough Speedway.
“I think the [Legends Cars] are a good fit for what I want to be doing right now,” explains Adams. “The power-to-weight ratio make them a handful to drive and there’s a ton of competition that keeps you on your toes. There’s a reason these cars are popular right now and everybody wants to race them.”
Adams is just the latest racer to transition into Legends Car racing from another discipline, joining former Ltd. Late Model standout Robin Jongen, fellow Thunder Car transplant Shawn Murray and former ACT Late Model racer Dave Riopelle among many others.
“I don’t think my story is much different from a lot of the other guys on the roster,” shrugs the Owen Sound, ON native. “I had a great time racing the Thunder Car for as long as I did, but eventually the cost just got to be too much. The Legends Car lets me keep racing without needing to sink an unreasonable amount of money into it.”
And while Adams had a rocky start to his Legends Car tenure, working through a multitude of mechanical woes throughout his rookie season, there’s no doubt the veteran possesses the innate talent required to visit victory lane on a number of occasions in 2018.
“I don’t think last season was perfect by a long shot, but we still learned a lot with the track time that we had,” explains Adams. “I was shaving time off with every lap that I made. Just getting more comfortable and learning about what works and what doesn’t.”
“That’ll be the key to any success I have this year,” continues the former Autumn Colours Classic winner. “It’s just figuring out all of the little things. Then, eventually, you start making big gains because of them. That’s the plan for this season.”
