KINGSTON, ON – After climbing from her family-owned ride at New York’s Utica-Rome Speedway last Sunday having tallied a hard-fought 13th-place finish, personable rising star Jessica Power took the time to reflect on her DIRTcar Sportsman Program.
After a slow start to the season – thanks in part to a myriad of weather-related event cancellations – Power’s program has hit its stride in recent weeks, with the first-generation racer working her way to 7th in the DIRTcar Sportsman Central Region points as the schedule rapidly approaches its halfway mark.
“We lost a lot of races to the rain at the beginning of the season so that made it hard for us to get into a rhythm,” explains Power. “But, once we got going, it felt like we’ve had an awesome grasp on our car and what’s been needed to get the most out of our equipment.”
Power’s first victory of 2019 came in weekly competition on June 26th at Can-Am Speedway in Lafargeville, NY. Looking back on her team’s improving performance, the Kingston, ON native credits the region’s ample competition for pushing the family-run team to reinvent the improve their operation.
“I have a bunch respect for every team we’re out here racing week each week because all of the effort they put into their operations is what keeps us in the shop all week working to get better,” says Power.
“They put in the same hours we do and it shows in what they bring to the speedway. We absolutely are racing with some of the best teams in the region and it has made us better every single night.”
Looking ahead to the second half of the season, Power is intent on seizing the momentum generated by her strong opening half and adding to her win Sportsman Division win totals.
“I want to do anything and everything I can to make sure our second half is even better than our first half,” smiles Power. “We have confidence in our team and our equipment right now that hasn’t just built up over night. We’ve been working on our stuff for a few years and it seems like we’ve really started to turn the corner with it.”
“I’d love for us to get a few more wins and get back into the top-5 in (DIRTcar Central Region) points. This division is so tough – if you’re anywhere in the top-10 it really feels like you’ve accomplished something. But, I know we can set our sights even higher.”
