COLDWATER, ON – After competing sporadically for his family-owned team in select APC United Late Model Series events last season, Jade Franklin will switch gears in 2020 with a full-time pursuit of Sunset Speedway’s Limited Late Model Rookie championship for car owner Eldon Wallis.
“Having the chance to join up with Eldon and his outfit is a huge opportunity,” says Franklin. “Running as a teammate to Rick Spencer- Walt and being around his guys week-in and week-out is the type of thing that could absolutely take our program to the next level. This is everything I could’ve asked for.”
Franklin’s competitive full-time future was in doubt, but his newfound partnership with Wallis has provided the teenager with a second chance.
“When we were trying to run the (APC United Late Model Series) tour there were a lot of nights where it felt like we were swimming upstream,” explains the Coldwater, ON native.
“We were doing it as a small, family-run team and we were having a hard time competing with the bigger budget programs. We didn’t know what direction our team was heading at the end of the season I really didn’t have an immediate plan for where I was headed or what I was going to do.”
“The fact that I get to work side-by-side with Rick (Walt) and his guys every Saturday is absolutely not something I’m taking lightly,” adds Franklin. “These guys are as good as it gets right now and just being around them is something that I’m positive will make me better in the long run.”
Franklin will set his sights on Sunset’s Rookie of the Year title, though he’s not at all willing to discredit his new team’s chances of chasing down 2020 Limited Late Model division feature wins.
“Our goal is to come out and run the best we can with the equipment that Eldon is providing us with,” said Franklin. “The stuff (Eldon) has is some of the best of the best, so there’s no reason we can’t be contending for wins every week.”
“I have a lot of laps at Sunset and I know that speedway better than anywhere else in the province. I know that I can contend for wins there. We’re all working like crazy to get our stuff ready for opening night. I can’t wait to see what we bring to the table this year because I know we’re good enough to be up front.”
Jade Franklin is currently looking for marketing partners for their 2020 season.
