NEWMARKET, ON – Super Stock rising star Gerrit Tiemersma will have a brand new primary sponsor at his side when his family-owned team returns to Sunset Speedway in search of a 2019 track championship this April.
Tiemersma announced this week that longtime short track racing supporter Wayfreight Services Ltd. has partnered with the multi-time feature winner for the upcoming season.
“It’s an honour to be able to welcome (Wayfreight Owner) John Way and his entire team to our program for this season,” beams Tiemersma. “They’ve been involved in racing for a long time – so to know that they have enough faith in me to want to be involved with our team is a huge boost of confidence.”
The sight of Wayfreight’s livery adorning the side of a Tiemersma-owned car will be a familiar sight to many, seeing as the Guelph, ON-based outfit was a major supporter of Gerrit’s uncle Derrick Tiemersma for a number of years throughout the 2000’s.
“Wayfreight sponsored my uncle for over ten years and he won a ton of races for them – so I want more than anything to keep that legacy going,” says Gerrit. “Having their support puts us in an awesome position to go after the Sunset championship in 2019. I’m counting the hours until our season opener.”
Hot on the heels of an 8th-place finish in the 2018 championship points standings, Tiemersma insists his family-owned team is more motivated than ever to break into the championship conversation.
“When we were at our best last season, I’d like to think we were one of the top teams on the roster,” offers Tiemersma. “Unfortunately, we hit a lot of stumbling blocks and just never found the consistent rhythm that we needed. That needs to change this year.”
“I’m lucky to have the team that I do and the sponsors that believe in me – and I need to bring them the results they deserve,” adds the third-generation racer. “We wouldn’t come back season after season if we didn’t think we could win. We have all the pieces necessary – it’s up to me to put them all together.”
