Gary Elliott Feeling Blessed after Successful 2018 Season

Gary ElliottWATERDOWN, ON – With a very busy 2018 campaign now at its end, veteran Gary Elliott is all smiles as he looks back at the season that was.

For the fifth consecutive year, ‘The Ironman’ followed the entirety of the OSCAAR Modified Tour – however the 2018 season saw Elliott add a number of dates to his schedule splitting a Pro Late Model ride with his son David in weekly competition at Flamboro Speedway.

“I believe that the older you get, the more you appreciate all the little things about this sport,” says Elliott with a smile. It’s all about the experience. Being on the road with the OSCAAR Modified Tour and splitting a [Pro] Late Model ride with David at Flamboro made for an incredible season.”

At the age of 70, Elliott is considered one of the most tenured racers in the province, and celebrated his 50th season of competition by finishing 4th in both the OSCAAR Modified Tour’s championship points standings as well as the Flamboro Speedway Pro Late Model championship points standings.

“If you had told me twenty years ago that I would still be racing every weekend at the age of seventy I would never have believed you,” admits the Waterdown, ON native. “I feel like I’ve been blessed. Truly blessed. Splitting a season of racing with David was a dream come true – to win a feature during that partnership was just the icing on the cake.”

And, while his status as an Ontario short track icon is already very much cemented, it doesn’t appear as though Elliott is prepared to slow down any time soon, as he’s already looking ahead to what could be on the horizon for the 2019 season.

“So long as the God keeps me upright, I’ll be back at the speedway as much as possible next year,” confirms Elliott. “We’re going to take a few weeks off this month and then we’ll evaluate where we’d like to be next year.”

“I truly believe that we have a Modified program that’s strong enough to win a championship on the OSCAAR tour – and I’d like to make that happen before I step away. But, at the same time, being at Flamboro with David was some of the most fun I’ve had in a long, long time. It’s an exciting time for our team right now, and I’m very much looking forward to letting our fans and our friends know where we’ll be in 2019.”
