Armed with a rejuvenated team and a new approach to setup and strategy. Davey led his family-run program to two feature wins, in addition to a litany of top-5 finishes, for his best Sunset Speedway campaign in almost a decade.
“It was a great feeling to show everyone that we haven’t forgotten how to run up front in this division,” said Davey candidly. “It’s real tough to stay on top of the advancements with these cars from year to year. And, when you lose a step or two- like we have in the past – it’s even tougher to find your way back.”
The Innisfil, ON veteran – a former division champion at both Sunset Speedway and Barrie Speedway – exemplified a true return to form throughout this season. And, even with the 2019 campaign still months away, Davey insists that his team is more ready than ever to follow up on all of his 2018 successes.
“I keep telling anyone that’ll listen that this year wasn’t just about having one last chance at a couple wins before we pack it all in,” notes the longtime fan favourite.
“We want to believe that this is the start of something new for us,” adds Davey. “There’s a lot here that we can build on to be even better next year. We’re already working to get our stuff ready so that we can compete for wins right from Day 1 next season.”
And, while the story of 2018 was largely about Davey’s return to contention on a weekly basis, the multi-time winner hopes that his 2019 season will be about even more.
“I want us to have the chance to race for a championship,” explains ‘Flyin Frank’. “Right now we have good people, good equipment and experience with winning races and titles in this division – that’s a real good place to start with when you’re talking about coming out and running for points.”
“If we can get our legs under us early on the Summer then there’s no reason we can’t be in the mix all season. Our goal right now is to come back next year – with a car that’s even better than we have right now – and get to the top of the division and win another championship.”
