ORONO, ON – Fan favourite Danny Benedict has confirmed that the 2019 season will see him follow the most aggressive schedule of his young career.
The Orono, ON racer will look to make history this coming season by becoming the first driver to simultaneously earn championships in Sunset Speedway’s weekly Limited Late Model division as well as the APC United Late Model Series.
“This is definitely not the sort’ve thing I’d be taking on if I didn’t think we had the right team of people,” says Benedict with a smile. “I went back and forth on this decision for a huge chunk of the off-season because I didn’t even want to talk about it out loud if I didn’t think it was possible to follow this schedule.”
“But, at the end of the day, we have all the pieces to make this happen – so it’s time to go for it,” adds the second-generation racer.
Benedict will hope to follow up on an impressive 2018 Sunset Speedway campaign in which he earned a number of feature victories en route to finishing a close second to eventual champion Gord Shepherd.
“We made some massive gains (in 2018) that I’m really excited to build on,” explains Benedict. “This time last year we had two years of experience and a bunch of ideas that we just wanted to try out. I couldn’t have been happier with how everything played out in the end.”
“Our team has more confidence in our program and I don’t think our package as a whole has ever been better. I really believe that we’re at the tip of the spear when it comes to Limited Late Model teams and I’m real excited to try and chase down a championship this summer.”
In addition to his Saturday night commitments with his Limited Late Model, Benedict will also set out on tour for the first time behind the wheel of a Shaw Motorsports-built Pro Late Model with the APC United Late Model Series.
The tour’s aggressive cross-province schedule will take Benedict to a number of new facilities and match him against a myriad of Ontario’s best Late Model outfits.
“The Pro Late [Model] is going to be a big step for us,” admits Benedict. “The APC Series races are all longer than most of the events I’m used to and their level of talent is just about the best you’re going to find anywhere in Ontario. I can’t wait to go toe-to-toe with the teams on the tour.”
“I’m lucky to be surrounded by the best people I could possibly ask for and we’re all ready to work. This is going to be a big year for us, but this kind of opportunity is the type of thing I’ve dreamed about doing since I was a little kid. I never thought I’d have the chance to put something like this together – but here we are.”
