ACTON, ON – There’s no arguing the fact that Brandon McFerran has never been one to back down from a challenge.
The second-generation racer rose to prominence with a 2014 Sunset Speedway Mini Stock championship but has not yet found the same rhythm since jumping to the wildly competitive Super Stock division in 2016.
“No one could ever tell you that moving from a Mini Stock to a Super Stock isn’t a giant transition,” details McFerran. “You think that you’re prepared for it and that you’ve thought about all the different angles but until you’re actually out here with these guys week to week you really don’t have a clue.”
‘The Astronaut’ has had a sporadic presence at the front of the field in the Super Stock division, registering podium finishes at Sunset Speedway and Flamboro Speedway before breaking through with a Sauble Speedway triumph in 2017.
“Getting a win was a way for us to validate and justify all of the effort we’ve put into our program,” explains the fan favourite. “It let us know that we are definitely good enough to run up front with the best guys in the province. But – once we found that out – all it did was make us want to win every week.”
This season, McFerran will split time between his family-owned entry and the same Kevin Gallant-owned McColl Racing Enterprises chassis that propelled McFerran to a runner-up finish in Flamboro Speedway’s weekly points in 2017.
“I can’t say enough about how much I appreciate Kevin Gallant giving me the chance to saddle up with him to go after a track title,” smiles the Acton, ON product.
“I really believe that – between our family car and Kevin’s equipment – I have an awesome chance at pushing for a division championship. Kevin’s an awesome racer and a great teammate – I can’t wait to see what we can do together this season.”
In addition to weekly Flamboro events, McFerran and Gallant are working to secure sponsorship to pursue a number of large-scale invitational and Crown Jewel events across Ontario.
“Right now we’re just meeting with marketing partners and dropping off sponsorship proposals so that we can race as many of the big shows this year as possible,” smiles McFerran. “It’s a grind man. This is a 365-day-a-year job disguised as a hobby – but I love every minute of it.”
