ORILLIA, ON – OSCAAR Modified Tour mainstay AJ Emms hopes to open his 2019 in picture-perfect fashion this weekend, as his family-run team looks to chase down Sunset Speedway victory lane during Round 1 of the tour’s schedule.
“Sunset is always going to be a special place for me – no matter what I’m racing,” Voiced Emms. “I grew up in Orillia so I’ve been coming to Sunset for almost as long as I can remember. I’ve watched big races at Sunset all my life and I always imagined what it would be like to win a big race in front of a huge crowd there.”
Emms will no doubt have a large contingent of family and friends in the stands this weekend, as the OSCAAR Modified Tour fills out a pivotal spot on Sunset’s annually anticipated ‘Spring Velocity’ card.
“This is every bit a home game for us,” confirms the second-generation racer. “I’m on the road a lot during the Summer, racing at different speedways, so its a huge deal to be so close to home racing in front of family and friends that don’t always have the chance to come out and watch when I’m halfway across the province.”
AJ has an aggressive schedule planned for his 2019 season, with intentions of splitting time between his family-owned Open Wheel Modified as well as a Limited Late Model ride that he’ll campaign part-time during weekly Sunset Speedway competition.
“We’re fortunate to have had a lot of things fall into place over the off-season so that we can stay busy this Summer,” explains Emms. “There’s been a lot of homework done over the off-season to ensure that we’re bringing the best piece possible to the track every time we race.”
“A win at the Spring Velocity would be the perfect way to start our year. It’s one of the premier races in the province and when you run well there people stand up and take notice of you. We absolutely want to set the pace for the rest of our season, so I can promise we’re bringing our game face this weekend.”
