The two-day event will serve as the opening round of the six-race Great Lakes Concrete Super Late Model Series, culminating with a 50-lap feature event on Sunday afternoon.
“Anytime we have the chance to race in front of a big crowd it’s a huge motivator,” says McLean. “We’ve spent our entire Winter upgrading our equipment and designing an entirely new setup. It’s been a lot of work. A lot of hours. This is the perfect chance to show that off.”
McLean’s team continues to invest time in their program in the days leading up to this weekend’s race, all the while dreaming of just what it would feel like to outrun some of the biggest names in the Super Stock division.
“A top-5 at the [Spring] Velocity would be the biggest moment of my career so far,” admits the third-generation racer. “That’s what I’m thinking about every night we’re in the shop getting ready for this weekend. It’ll be one of the best fields we’re going to race with all season. So, obviously, running up front against them isn’t going to be easy – but that’s what’ll make it feel that much more special.”
The youngster is one of over a dozen racers expected to enter all six GLCS events in 2018, and is hoping for a momentous start to the season to help propel his program into the next round at Sauble Speedway.
“Our team is ‘all in’ when it comes to chasing points with this series,” says McLean. “Because our season revolves around these six races, we’re taking Round 1 as serious as we can. It’s so important to get off to a good start and not put ourselves in a bad position when it comes to the standings.”
“No driver ever got less-talented by racing against tough competition,” adds the teenager. “I know that I have a lot of work ahead of me, but everything that I learn this season is going to make me better in the long run. This is an awesome opportunity to gain experience that will help me for the rest of my career.”
