ORO MEDONTE, ON – Although he entered the Sunset Speedway season widely considered to be underdog for the NASCAR Late Model championship, ‘The Upgrade’ Rick Walt has wasted little time proving that his Eldon Wallis-owned outfit belongs in the 2017 title picture.
“It’s been an awesome start to the year so far,” smiles Walt. “I don’t think we’re surprising people anymore with how well this car is working. If we can unload as fast as we were two weeks ago, then we might be sitting here talking about our third win by the time Sunday rolls around”.
Walt will enter Saturday’s event 5th in the Late Model points standings – just 20-points behind current leader (and longtime rival) Gord Shepherd.
“I absolutely think the other guys in the top-5 know we’re there,” affirms the third-generation racer. “We stand the same chance as any of them when it comes to running down this championship. There’s a long way to go, and things are only now starting to work themselves out, but we’re definitely coming for these guys”.
With the Sunset schedule preparing to hit its fevered pitch in July, Walt knows the opportunity to close the gap on Shepherd’s control over the standings is ripe for the taking.
“It’s going to get interesting,” nods the former Peterborough Speedway champion. “If one of us can get hot and go on a run, it’ll make things difficult for the other four to keep up”.
“But, I mean, these guys aren’t rookies,” adds Walt. “They know what they’re doing. Gord [Shepherd] has been strong so far, [Nick] Goetz is always good, Taylor [Holdaway] has won this deal before and knows what it takes. It’s going to be tight all season. May the best team win”.
