GUELPH, ON – Following a 2017 hiatus, former Sunset Speedway Super Stock champion Matt Bentley has announced he will be back in competition this season, splitting time between a part-time return to weekly competition at Sunset and a full time run towards the inaugural Great Lakes Concrete Super Stock Series title.
“Our number one goal for our season is to come back and win this [Great Lakes Super Stock] Series championship,” explains Bentley with a wide smile. “I mean – as soon as I heard the first rumours and started reading the stories about it – I knew it was for me.”
“We’ve done a lot of updates to our car to make sure we can come out and contend with the best of the best,” continues the second-generation racer. “This is a huge year for us because it’s going to give us the chance to get back in the spotlight and make some huge statements.”
While Bentley established himself as one of the most successful Super Stock contenders in recent history with a number of highlight reel performances, he maintains a sense of purpose when discussing his return to competition.
“I’m not feeling any pressure from anyone or anything but myself,” insists the multi-time feature winner. “We’ve been to the top of the mountain with this program – so I know how good it can be. I want to make sure that we’re at our best every single time we sign in at the pit gate. I can’t let myself settle for anything less.”
When asked if there’s anything Bentley intends to change about his style entering the inaugural season of the Great Lakes Concrete Series, the Guelph, ON native instead chose to highlight just how much he hopes remains the same.
“I learned a lot about myself and my team when we won our championship,” explains Bentley. “It helped me understand just how committed you have to be from one end of the season to the other. If we can carry that over to this year then I know we’re going to be a threat every week.”
