ORILLIA, ON – Former Outlaw 4 cylinder Modified champion AJ Emms will look to take his first step towards an inaugural OSCAAR Modified Tour title this weekend, as the cross-province series prepares to kickstart its 2018 season during Sunset Speedway’s massive two-day Spring Velocity event.
“There’s no bigger or better way to start our season than winning at Sunset,” says Emms. “Our team is based out of Orillia – so Sunset has always been like a home track for us. We’re going to have a ton of support in the stands this weekend. From sponsors to neighbours to family – we’re excited to perform in front of them and show off just how strong we can be.”
Emms has been one of the OSCAAR tour’s most intriguing prospects in recent seasons, racking up two tour victories and an incredible 20 top-5 finishes over the course of 33 career appearances with the series.
“We’ve never been hungrier,” says the second-generation racer of his family-run team. “An early win is crucial for us. The sooner we can get our footing with this program, the sooner we can start turning up the intensity to try and chase down that championship this season.”
When asked what a Spring Velocity triumph would mean to his tight-knit team, Emms explains that a win at Sunset is every bit as much about legacy as it is about the immediate impact it would play on the tour’s championship points standings.
“This event has come a long way in a short amount of time,” notes Emms. “It really is one of the ‘majors’ on our schedule now. Everyone wants to win it these days. It’s one of those wins that really jumps off your resume. So, because of that, we know that we’re really going to have our work cut out from us when the trailer door comes down.”
“We’ve done our homework all off-season – so we’ll be ready for whatever’s thrown at us,” adds the former Autumn Colours Classic winner. “I’m anticipating one of the best fields we’ve come up against in a long time. The [OSCAAR Modified] Tour is in a really good place right now – and we want to start this season off on top of it.”
